Position At Black Wind: Co-founder, reviewer
Hometown: New Baltimore, Michigan
What You Do In Real Life: Exist … what else?
Preferred Style Of Metal: I ultimately prefer bands more than styles so …
Least Favorite Styles Of Metal: … I wouldn’t really have a least favorite, would I?
Favorite Non-Metal Music: Earthy stuff
How You Got Into Metal / First Metal Album: Metal came to me in the mid-90s in the form of Metallica’s self-titled effort – I got it on cassette tape and, as they say, the rest is (supposedly) history. My tastes have evolved quite a bit since then, of course, though that is where it all started.
Favorite Metal Albums: Moonsorrow’s Verisäkeet, In Flames’ The Jester Race, Agalloch’s The Mantle and The White, Children Of Bodom’s Follow The Reaper, Sonata Arctica’s Winterheart’s Guild and The Days Of Grays, Katatonia’s Brave Murder Day, Dark Tranquillity’s Projector, Slipknot’s All Hope Is Gone, Eternal Tears Of Sorrow’s A Virgin And A Whore and many others …
Favorite Metal Artists (In Alphabetical Order): Agalloch, Ahab, Alcest, Be’lakor, Carach Angren, Children Of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, In Flames, In Mourning, Insomnium, Kalmah, Katatonia, Moonsorrow, Omnium Gatherum, Opeth, Slipknot, Sonata Arctica and Swallow The Sun (though I am sure I am forgetting a couple).
Most Overrated Metal Artists: Hmm, maybe all of the artists I don’t care for?
What Metal Means To You: Metal as a genre does not especially mean a lot to me although, on the other hand, the artists I enjoy within it mean a tremendous amount to me and have had a significant impact on my life and development. It’s sometimes almost frightening to think about where I’d be (or not be) without my beloved musical companions.
Why You Enjoy Reviewing: … who ever said I enjoy it? Jokes aside, I value providing readers with a (sometimes) different perspective on metal’s champions that is driven just as much by objective critique as subjective emotion – I can’t, after all, completely detach my heart from my head when it comes to something as near and dear as music. All the same, I hope you enjoy at least a portion of what I have to say here at Black Wind Metal.
Best Personal Encounter With A Metal Musician: I was afforded the opportunity to meet and interview Tony Kakko face-to-face in 2007 and the experience was one to remember; needless to say, he was an absolute gentleman.
Favorite Literature: Pretty much everything by Kafka, Lovecraft, Poe and Nietzsche but, beyond that, I’d say some of my favorite titles include Wilde’s The Picture Of Dorian Gray and The Soul Of Man Under Socialism, Shelley’s Frankenstein, Stoker’s Dracula, Rimbaud’s A Season In Hell, Ellis’ American Psycho, Camus’ The Stranger and, yes, Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings.
Favorite Films: Videodrome, Herzog’s Nosferatu, Carpenter’s The Fog and In The Mouth Of Madness, Hardy’s The Wicker Man, Jacob’s Ladder, Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, Harvey’s Carnival Of Souls, Bava’s Black Sunday, Nadja, Cannibal Holocaust, Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, City Of The Living Dead, Night Of The Werewolf, The Vampire Lovers, Milius’ Conan: The Barbarian, The Seventh Seal, The Godfather, Blue Velvet and many, many, many others.
Favorite (One And Only) Television Show: Serling’s The Twilight Zone
Favorite Cuisine: Lasagna
Favorite Beverage: Milk
Song That You Would Have Played At Your Funeral: Swallow The Sun’s “Weight Of The Dead”
