As fans of melodic metal, there are few men we owe a deeper debt of gratitude to than Jon Lord. As the founding member of Deep Purple, he was at the forefront of the birth of heavy metal, and before the genre had even been fully realized, he knew it had a natural place next to a symphony orchestra. Lord and Ritchie Blackmore (The father of the shred) went on to incorporate dueling leads, as well as an organ sound that was so imposing that it could only be described as “The Beast”. Lord was a highly regarded jazz player with obvious experience in classical playing, and such fusion paved the way for nearly every keyboardist in power metal. The songs listed here are but a small piece of Lord’s extensive discography, but in my experience I can safely say I regard him as among the greatest rock/metal keyboard players to ever live.
